HONG KONG, 24 AUGUST 2016 — UNICEF Charity Run 2016 (the Charity Run), now marches into its 11th year, is calling for 14,000 runners to join its efforts to achieve an AIDS-free world. Organized by the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK), the UNICEF Charity Run 2016 will be held on 27 November 2016 (Sunday) at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Sunny Bay. As the second largest scale of long-distance running event in Hong Kong among those recognized by AIMS and HKAAA, UNICEF Charity Run 2016 will provide a wide array of races, including Half Marathon, 10km, 5km, and 3km, for individual runners and families to choose from.

As part of the 30th anniversary of UNICEF HK, this year the Charity Run will have more than 30 corporate relay teams compete for the top corporate title on half-marathon while corporate leaders from different business sectors will race for their best time in the 3km Leadership Challenge.

Together, the races combined are expected to raise over HK$11 million to support UNICEF to eliminate mother-to-children transmission of HIV around the world.

Since its launch in 2006, the UNICEF Charity Run has engaged over 98,000 runners and raised over HK$95.5 million.  UNICEF’s global campaign against AIDS focuses on protecting babies from being infected with HIV at birth and providing treatment, counselling and support for mothers and children affected by HIV and AIDS. Through UNICEF and its partners, the campaign has averted over 1.59 million cases of mother-to-child transmission of HIV since 2005 while AIDS-related deaths of children have fallen by nearly 58 per cent globally.

Jane Lau, Chief Executive of UNICEF HK, said, “Earlier this year, Thailand was the second country, after Cuba, to have been certified free of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It shows us that we are closer than ever before to ‘AIDS to ZERO’, but much remains to be done when over 400 children are still being infected with HIV every day. We would call for all Hong Kong people to support UNICEF’s work, and together we can make ZERO new HIV infections, ZERO AIDS-related deaths and ZERO discrimination a reality.”

UNICEF Charity Run 2016 is made possible by Diamond Sponsors, namely CCB International (Holdings) Limited and Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited, and Gold Sponsors, namely Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, Sunlink Holdings (H.K.) Ltd., S.F. Express (Hong Kong) Limited, Sun Life Hong Kong Limited, Asia Miles Limited, New World Development Company Limited, and a number of supporting partners.

In addition, Official Sportswear Sponsor adidas Hong Kong Limited will provide event souvenir T-shirt and training workshops for the runners.

“UNICEF Charity Run 2016 will once again provide a spectacular event for runners from the community and the business sector and families to enjoy a sporting event on a Sunday while, at the same time, join hands with UNICEF to achieve an AIDS-free generation,” said Ms Lau.
