2018-06-04

Hong Kong, 1 June 2018 – The Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) welcomes and supports the government’s official establishment of a Commission on Children (the Commission) which commences operation today. It marks a major step towards inging child rights to the heart of government’s policy making process in Hong Kong. UNICEF HK expects the Commission to evolve to an independent statutory body within the term of the current administration.

Around the world, UNICEF has worked with many jurisdictions for the establishment of children’s commissions as independent public institutions to look to ing children’s needs in focus. Currently over 200 jurisdictions have similar set-up. “A number of key child issues are covered in the initial work plan of the Commission.  We look forward to working hand in hand with the Commission to ing children’s perspectives in policy making”, said Jane Lau, Chief Executive, UNICEF HK.

UNICEF believes the goal of safeguarding the rights of all children in all circumstances can only be achieved when our policy vision and interventions are supported by reliable evidence and sound insight.  “UNICEF HK is ready to work with the Commission in all focus areas, in particular the arrangement of data compilation on children. We are pleased to provide technical expertise and experience as we work alongside the Commission in reflecting the state of Hong Kong’s children and help derive policies that meet the social context of Hong Kong”, continued Jane Lau.
