Environmental Pollution Aggravates Child Malnutrition, UNICEF HK Chairman Judy Chen Urges Global Community to Take Action

Hong Kong, 29 July 2019 – Speaking at The Economist’s Feeding the Future Summit 2019 in Singapore last Friday, Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK), pointed out that improper waste management could lead to a food crisis, and this would indirectly aggravate child malnutrition and cause irreversible physical and cognitive damage to children. As such, she appealed to the international community to focus on child malnutrition and come up together with lasting solutions to this issue.
Undernutrition kills one child every 10 seconds. Ms Chen said, “Factors like improper waste management and population growth have led to an acute food security problem and all forms of malnutrition. In particular, it is disturbing that due to malnutrition, nearly 151 million children under 5 around the world suffer from stunting.”
UNICEF is committed to addressing child malnutrition. Together with governments, private corporations and our partners, we are striving to tackle global malnutrition by scaling up the volume of food supply and supporting innovations in the development of nutrition products, etc.
